Coach Derrek "Stick" Johnson
City
of Trees Coach Award 2006 (pdf)
My running life started out by running track and
cross-country in high-school and enjoying success there.
I then started college at Western Washington University
and competed in both track and cross-country there,
earning a varsity letter my sophomore year. After
transferring to University of Northern Colorado my
junior year, I decided against competing and decided
instead to coach at the local high school. I coached
there my final 2 years of college. With my teaching
degree in hand, I worked at a couple of high-schools in
Colorado and coached the distance team at Windsor High
School. After moving to Boise and changing professions,
I took a hiatus from running and coaching for a few
years, and got lazy and hated it. Now, I have been
training again the last couple of years and realized I
have lost the speed of my youth, but gained the
enjoyment of just running and having fun no matter what
pace I am. I look forward to coaching with BOISE
RunWalk!
