Coach Dave
Opalenik
I was a couch potato
most of my life. I had a few short periods of trying to
work out and get in-shape. But it never lasted. I
remember at one point telling my wife, “I just can’t
understand why someone would enter a race, when they
know without a doubt that they have no chance of
winning”. But for some unknown reason, in the fall of
2003, I set a goal of completing the Race to Robie
Creek. And I used the 2003 YMCA Christmas Run as a
stepping stone for reaching that goal. When I crossed
the finish line of that first race, a light went off,
and I finally understood. By setting specific goals and
working toward those goals, something that I always
viewed as boring, suddenly became fun. And I was hooked!
Being involved with a group like BRW has so many
benefits. All the coaches have a wealth of experience.
And they each have something different to offer. Now
that I have a couple years of running under my belt, I
look forward to the opportunity to add my two cents, and
hopefully help a few others reach their goals.
