Frequently Asked Questions

When can I join BOISE RunWalk?
Your membership with Active Community Wellness includes BOISE RunWalk, and you may either become a member at the start of each new season, or start anytime you're ready to have fun! Join anytime. No need to wait until a new program begins. We'll put you into a group of friends.

Should I get in shape before joining BOISE RunWalk? I'd like to get started running or walking again, but should I get in shape first before I join you?
Don't wait. You've been waiting all your life. We're ready to have fun right now. Are you ready? Our members consist of runners and walkers of all ages and abilities. Couch potatoes too!

I'm considering a membership but would like to check-out the program first. Do you allow drop-ins? Sure! Stop by for a visit anytime before you decide to complete a registration form and join the fun. During your drop-in, if you'd like to participate in the workouts, it would be best to contact a coach first by phone so we can place you in the correct group after discussing your goals. Either way, stop by and be our guest.

What is BOISERunWalk?
We are a group-supported distance training program for adults who benefit from coaching and having fun while accomplishing challenging fitness goals. BOISE RunWalk is part of Active Community Wellness, and we help people get back in shape. Overweight? Obese? Diabetic? We're the group for you. And no one is turned away for inability to pay.

Who should join?
Anybody who has difficulty training alone, who has a gym membership going to waste, anyone who needs accountability, anybody who is slow, fast, old, young, slim, overweight or age between 16 and 95. You!

When is the RunWalk season?
We meet year round! Rain or shine. A year is generally divided into specific seasons which target various distances or events. Checkout the programs page for more information.

Where is the training?
BOISE RunWalk and Active Community Wellness meet In the winter at Fort Boise Community Center, and in the summer we meet on the Boise Greenbelt. Throughout the year we alternate between hills, trails and the greenbelt.

Can walkers participate?
Absolutely! Walkers are a BIG part of our membership.

Are you affiliated with a charity?
BOISE RunWalk is one of several programs inside Active Community Wellness, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. We rely on memberships and community giving to sustain our contributions to active community wellness.
Active Community Wellness offers membership assistance, and is supported by the charitable giving of individuals and corporations so that no one is turned away due to inability to pay.

How did BOISE RunWalk come to be?
BOISE RunWalk was founded in 2003 and in 2009 was donated by BlakeUSA Corporation to Active Community Wellness as part of a long-term strategy of wellness contributions into our community.

How did Active Community Wellness come to be?
Active Community Wellness, a nonprofit, was founded by Steve Blake, John Hubert and a small group of friends to create a platform of long-term sustainable growth of the training and wellness programs of BOISE RunWalk. We are offering training programs for triathletes and multisport activities.

What goals can I achieve with Active Community Wellness and BOISE RunWalk?
Your fitness and wellness goals will be attained by participating in our group programs which are based on exercise, nutrition and group support. With BOISE RunWalk you will be coached beginning with your current fitness level to a new and improved level of fitness based on goals you determine after consulting with your coach. Your goals might involve weight loss, improved cardio, better nutrition, seeking new friends, having more fun, or even running your first marathon. Our exercise and nutrition programs use walking and running and run-walking towards target distance goals of 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. Our goal for you is to help you stay injury free and have as much fun as possible!

Why should I walk or run slower than I'm capable?
Some need to go slower because they are not experienced at determining what their body can handle... especially at longer distances. With experience you have the option of training for speed. In the beginning however, discover successful training distances at a slower pace which will help you build a base of core fitness while staying injury free. Our program has people of all paces and skill levels, slow and fast, who discover their pace rather than force their pace early on and risk injury. With experience, discover what your body can handle. Until then, please listen to your coaches and slow down if you are returning to the sport of running following a long layoff.

What are the weekly coaching clinics?
We cover important topics such as nutrition, proper technique, cross-training and strategy most Saturday mornings before or after your training effort. These seminars take about 20 minutes and are intended to introduce subject material, help you to start asking questions and begin the journey up the amazing learning curve into the body of knowledge of endurance exercise.

Is there a training manual?
Our publication, BOISE RunWalk's Guide to Distance Training for Runners and Walkers (1st Edition), contains much of the information covered during the season, and is an optional manual that is very useful for beginners and intermediate skill levels. You'll appreciate the chapters on nutrition, form and technique, cross-training, weight training and strategy. Here is a
preview of the Table of Contents of the 73 page publication. Every member receives a PDF copy as part of your program. A printed and spiral bound copy is only $18.

What happens on any given Saturday?
Be sure to consult your training schedule or your weekly email update for times and locations. Arrive ready to have fun. You'll participate in an open dialogue in the form of a coaching clinic. Talk with your coaches and discuss your training issues. Go out with your coaches and the group following your warm-up, and finish your workout with stretching. Most Saturday mornings a sports therapist is available for consultation and brief sports massage. It's all about the relationships you build during a structured training program. We enjoy meeting afterwards for coffee too.

Supported routes: greenbelt, hills and trails.
Free sports massage most Saturdays.
Periodic socials and BBQs.

... the best reasons to get out of bed early on a Saturday morning!

I can't make it to the first weekend -- should I still sign up?
Of course. In fact, people join throughout the season.

How much training time does this program involve?
Generally, your schedule calls for 3-4 workouts each week. It's common for people to make adjustments to their plans after talking with a coach. The longest workouts are on Saturday mornings with your group. People with busy schedules can fit this type of training into their lives fairly easily, and most people make adjustments to the published schedule to better fit their specific family, social and work schedules.

Must I attend every Saturday?
We do not take attendance as such. We know you lead a busy life, take vacations, get sick, sleep in (ooops!)... we understand. Many of our more experienced members use BOISE RunWalk's support system for their longer workouts in a training plan to an event across the country. We do recommend that you talk with your coach before or after you miss a Saturday workout. Everyone misses a workout now and then without jeopardizing the ultimate goal. In fact, sometimes it's a good idea to miss a workout, but even if you will not exercise possibly on a Saturday, being with the group and participating in the coaching sessions is the best idea to help you learn.

Can we participate in races during training?
Yes! Please consult with your coach if you have training questions.

What if I want to find out more?
We like Facebook's community discussion board for our group and when you post your questions/answers there, everyone will benefit from reading it. No training topic is too embarrassing, we've been there with you before. You may also phone us... we like the phone especially since an open dialogue is necessary to help you get the best answer in a timely manner. Email? Yes, email is good too but recognized as timely and inefficient when it comes to drilling into the diagnosis of your question/issues.

Training Program Details

As a long-time veteran marathoner,
I can tell you the BOISE RunWalk training
program is better than any I have experienced in Atlanta, Orlando or New Orleans. The coaching structure, particularly with your team of coaches, the stature, talent and teaching ability is head
and shoulders above anything I have
encountered. And the seminar training
is superb. Great job!
 - John Hubert

Thank you BOISE RunWalk! The positive
attitudes each morning and all the work you coaches do is appreciated. Thanks for the encouragement throughout our 15.5 miler. Your positive comments and smiles along the route helped give the boost needed to get through the entire workout. Coaches greeting us at the end with congratulatory smiles and positive words helped add to the personal feeling of accomplishment. When I signed up for the
program, I had no clue of what I had gotten
myself into - but it has all been positive and I sincerely appreciate the coaches and fellow participants. It is great to see so many different people with different personal goals come
together and lend each other positive support. Thanks so much for promoting this positive and
fun training program and the incredible group dynamics. Thanks!   - Mary
