The purpose of strength training in any fitness program is to improve the power that a muscle can exert while improving the neuromuscular (brain to body) pathways for the skills required for a specific sport. This is particularly important when you are concentrating on an activity such as running or walking because a stronger body gives you an “extra gear” to work with. A study in the Journal of Sports Medicine cited an improvement of 8% in running economy when a runner has participated in a strength training regimen. That means run long and strong!
